Three BCMS members were selected by the San
Antonio Business Journal’s editorial team to be part
of its 13th annual 40 Under 40 Awards.
Minas Chrysopoulo, MD, Charles Keller, MD, and
Ezequiel Silva, MD were included in the 40 professionals
honored by the publication for showing significant career
advancement at a young age, commitment to their fields,
community involvement, or a combination of all three.
This year’s winners were selected from a pool of 187 new
nominations, as well as more than 100 nominations from
last year.
Dr. Chrysopoulo, 35, is a renowned breast reconstruction
surgeon and partner in Plastic Reconstructive and Microsurgical
Associates of South Texas. He specializes in advanced
breast reconstruction techniques for patients facing mastectomy
because of breast cancer, and is only one of 40 surgeons
in the country to routinely perform the deep inferior epigastric
perforator (DIEP) flap breast reconstructive technique.
Dr. Keller, 39, is assistant professor of cellular and structural
biology at the Greehey Children’s Cancer Research
Institute (GCCRI) at the University of Texas Health Science
Center at San Antonio. Dr. Keller’s research focuses on
advanced childhood cancer which has spread beyond the
initial starting point of the disease, and he is using genetically-
engineered mice to study the development of and
advanced treatment options for two specific types of childhood
tumors. Dr. Keller designed a three-dimensional,
microCT-based Virtual Histology method that has greatly
increased the efficiency of the mouse-based research.
Dr. Silva, 38, is an officer and interventional radiologist
with the South Texas Radiology Group. He also was recently
appointed as chairman of the Radiology Department at
Southwest General Hospital, and he was chosen to represent
the Society of Interventional Radiologists on the federal
board that sets the digital codes for new medical terminology.
The interpretation and coding of the new medical
terminology, which physicians use to seek reimbursements
from the government through Medicare and Medicaid, will
affect how physicians are compensated.
A fourth physician, Seenu Reddy, MD, with the University
of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, also
was honored.
