Saving with TMLT’s Risk
Management Programs
A Special Report by TMLT Risk
Management Department

The purchase of medical liability protection each year is one of the high-dollar line items in a medical practice’s budget. When price is a big factor in your decision, how do you find the best value among the available choices? Look for opportunities to earn discounts that also provide you with something you need, such as CME.

At TMLT, a risk management discount can be earned by completing online CME courses, available at www.tmlt.org. TMLT’s online CME courses cover the latest topics in risk management. TMLT also offers CME through the Reporter newsletter and through two publications, Case Closed: A collection of TMLT closed claim studies Volume 1 and Volume 2. Case Closed and the Reporter are available free to TMLT policyholders.

TMLT policyholders also can take a risk management education course and earn a 3 percent discount (up to $1,000 per course). Policyholders can take up to two courses per year. TMLT offers scheduled seminars throughout Texas or policyholders can request a seminar for their group practice.

One of our most popular risk management discount opportunities is the practice review. In a practice review, a risk management professional visits the physician’s office to help determine risk exposures. Though some other insurance carriers charge for their on-site reviews, a TMLT practice review is free to all policyholders and can be completed during normal business hours without disrupting patient appointments.

Policyholders who complete the practice review process may be eligible for a 5 percent premium discount, after review recommendations are met. This discount continues through the end of the current policy plus two additional policy periods.

Additionally, TMLT offers a 2.5 percent discount for physicians who use electronic medical records (EMR) and electronic prescribing. This discount is offered in conjunction with a practice review and eligibility is contingent upon documented use of a program for a minimum of one year. The program must also meet specific risk management criteria.

By taking advantage of all the risk management discounts available through
TMLT, a physician can further reduce his or her premium significantly, as indicated in Table 1.

TMLT believes in rewarding physicians who make a commitment to patient safety. Our CME and risk management activities are accessible to all policyholders. For more information or to register for an activity, please visit www.tmlt.org or call 800-580-8658.
